A practice built around the relationship between client and clinician.
Why we started Breakfree, what we believe about psychology, and how we work — in plain language.
Breakfree Psychology Services opened in Townsville in 2018 because the standard model of weekly sessions in austere therapy rooms wasn't working for the couples and families we cared about. People in regional Queensland needed flexibility we didn't see being offered. NDIS participants needed clinicians who could actually write a report a planner could use. Couples in crisis needed something more than a 50-minute slot once a fortnight.
We built the practice around three commitments — evidence-based methods, warm and plain-language clinicians, and integrated care so therapy, assessment and behaviour support sit under one roof. Those commitments still drive every decision we make.
The relationship is the work
Decades of outcome research show the strongest predictor of therapy success is the quality of the relationship between client and clinician. We hire slowly, supervise closely, and keep caseloads small enough that you see the same clinician every session.
Method matters, but it isn't the magic
We use evidence-based modalities — Gottman Method, Schema Therapy, ACT, CBT, EMDR — because they have decades of outcome research behind them. We don't pretend they are the magic. The magic is in their patient, careful, contextual application.
Plain language, always
Psychology shouldn't feel like a vocabulary test. We write reports for the people who need to use them, explain assessments in language you can actually translate into decisions, and treat you as the expert on your own life.
